Ben Wizner on the Hamdan Decision and Sentence

This morning, ACLU attorney Ben Wizner, who's been in Guantánamo for more than two weeks as a human rights of observer of the trial of Salim Hamdan, podcasted his first-hand observations of Hamdan's sentencing yesterday. On Monday, August 11, at the U.S. District Court House at 500 Pearl St. in Manhattan, at 2:30 pm Dr. Aafia Siddiqui has a bail hearing. If people are in New York, and can find the time, it might be worth attending.

This is not about what she may or may not have done. It is about her detention in Bagram, whether or not she is prisoner 650, the Grey Lady of Bagram, and about extraordinary rendition, known as "disappearing" in Pakistan. It's also about medical care in detention for foreigners in the U.S. And it's about the ability of the U.S. government, in this case, specifically the FBI this time, to tell the truth. She says she was detained in Bagram, she is unsure how long because she couldn't keep track of time there, but believes it was years. The FBI says she was arrested July 17th. Outside of the U.S. the press does not believe the FBI, neither do an array of human rights organizations.
