Toby Keith Carries the Day on Capitol Hill

Well, we can all breathe a little easier and sleep a little better now thanks to Congress…or not. What is it that they did you ask? Did they vote to finally close Guantanamo? Perhaps they passed legislation to end the racially discriminatory sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine? Confronting the many Bush administration abuses of power and violations of our Constitution? Guess again. Honoring Toby Keith for his commitment to our armed forces? Ding, ding, ding!!!

Last night, the House passed the resolution on a voice vote. Now it’s on to the Senate! At least we can see they have their priorities straight. (Matt Bors found the passage of this legislation, H. Res. 1255, pretty hilarious too.)

Who the heck knew the Toby Keith lobby was so powerful?

First of all, once again I will say, Toby has always been against the war in Iraq. He has said that over and over, from the beginning of the war. His song was written strictly about 9/11, and about the terrorists. He did favor going into Afghanistan, as did everyone else at the time. He has not profited from the war. He goes to all the battle fronts every year to give free concerts, on his own dollar I must add, because he supports our troops wherever they are.
Second, the troubles our country is having are not new, have happened over and over, and will straighten out just like they always do. Before WW2 we didn’t even have Social Security, Welfare, or all the other hand-outs, and we survived that and a depression! All you whiners need to stop wringing your hands, do what you need to do to take care of yourselves and your families, and stop thinking it’s the responsibility of the government, and those of us who do work, to bail you out of whatever financial or health crisis you might be in. Yes, times are hard — everyone needs to grow up!!
