An Open Letter to Senator Specter

Dear Senator,

In reply to your remarks on MSNBC this week in regard to telecom immunity being "a festering wound," the ACLU would like to express its most enthusiastic feelings of agreement. It occurs to us, however, that you did vote for telecom immunity at both opportunities presented to you. (Remember? In February and July?) We are perplexed but also gladdened at your recent change of heart. And may we share this exciting news with you? It is within your very power to reverse this provision which so offends you. You, sir, can begin to heal this festering wound!

Love,
Us

(Seriously, though. Less talk and more rock, please. Congress can, in fact, repeal the telecom immunity provision. Just because the 110th caved in doesn't mean the 111th can't stand up. Put your money where your mouth is and let's do this.)

If Senator Specter believes in the law then he must equally believe that people who violate the law must be held accountable for the law to have any meaning. The telcos that were complicit with the NSA's illegal wiretapping "requests" must face prosecution: not all telcos requested to break the law for the NSA did so, and their reward should be to see that the telcos that did break the law face justice for their unlawful behavior.

Moreover it is a process DUE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. The granting of immunity itself is an act of complicity.

  2. SAN FRAN. Says:

YOU PEOPLE ARE SICK!!! YOU BELIEVE IN KILLING POOR INNOCENT BABIES!!! DIDN'T YOU LIBERALS "PROTEST" AGAINST THAT IN VIETNAM? BUT IT'S OKAY TO KILL AMERICAN BABIES? WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU? I DON'T HATE YOU OR JUDGE YOU. THAT IS GODS JOB TO JUDGE YOU. I PRAY FOR YOU. YOU PREACH AGAINST CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR PEOPLE WHO VICTIMIZE OTHERS BUT YET IT'S OKAY TO MURDER AN UNBORN CHILD? DON'T YOU THINK YOU'RE PRIORITIES ARE A LITTLE BACKWARDS? INMATES WHO KILL OTHER PEOPLE SHOULD BE PUNISHED. YOU NEED TO GET YOUR HEAD STRAIGHT!!!

    So...

Arlen Specter has a spasm of rational talk. I'll bet you there is no walk...

  4. Andy Says:

Here in PA, we learned long ago not to trust ol' Arlen to do right by the Constitution.
