1950s and early 1960s - NAZIM HIKMET (Turkish Poet) Because of his communist ideology, Hikmet earned the disapproval of authorities both at home and abroad. He was imprisoned for inciting a revolt among Turkish soldiers, a charge based on the fact that military cadets were found reading his poems. He toured Africa, Asia, and Europe in the 50s and early 60s, but was denied a visa to the U.S. because of his political beliefs. Though he spent much of his life in prison or in exile, he is now considered Turkey's greatest modern poet."] |
