1966 - PABLO NERUDA (Chilean Poet and Nobel Laureate) Pablo Neruda was invited to the International PEN Conference in New York. (PEN is a writers' group devoted to human rights and free expression.) Neruda's visa application was denied, probably based on his membership in the Chilean Communist party. Playwright and conference organizer Arthur Miller intervened on Neruda's behalf and he was granted a waiver of inadmissibility in order to attend. |
