Ozomatli Joins Marc Cohn for ACLU Gala

Ozomatli, the multiethnic, L.A.-based band known for its diverse sound as well as its outspoken political convictions will be performing at the ACLU 2008 Membership Conference, in Washington, D.C. on June 9.
The Grammy-award-winning group blends a variety of musical sounds including Latin, hip-hop, salsa, jazz, funk, rock and reggaeton, to deliver their intensely personal (and intensely political) message to audiences around the world. Their latest album, Don't Mess with the Dragon, highlights the band's passion, and occasionally anger, over some of the current administrations' most egregious missteps. The track 'Temperatura' was inspired by the 2006 pro-immigration marches ('We wanted people to take it to the streets and turn up the heat,' says band member Wil-Dog) and 'Magnolia Soul' chastises the Bush administration for their failures around Katrina. Ozomatli will be performing, along with fellow Grammy winner Marc Cohn, Monday night of the conference during the ACLU's gala event, 'Celebrating Liberty: A Tribute to Champions of Freedom.' Ozomatli's enthusiasm for social justice coupled with their upbeat, international sound is guaranteed to have conference goers out of their seats and rocking to the beats. Marc Cohn and John Hiatt Will Be There. Will You?

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Marc Cohn and critically-acclaimed music legend John Hiatt will be performing at the ACLU 2008 Membership Conference in Washington, D.C. John, a long-time favorite of ACLU President Nadine Strossen, will be performing the song 'Our Lady Liberty: Celebrating Nadine Strossen.' on June 10 during the closing luncheon. John is known for his mastery of a variety of styles, including new wave, rock and roll and blues and country. His songs have been covered by a long list of musical luminaries including: Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, and B. B. King with Eric Clapton. Marc Cohn, the 1991 Grammy winner for Best New Artist, and best known for his song "Walking in Memphis," will also be making an appearance at the conference. Perhaps Cohn always knew he'd be performing for the ACLU one day. One of the earliest bands he led was a 14-piece R&B group called 'The Supreme Court.' John and Marc aren't the only entertainers who will be joining us at the conference. We've lined up a number of top musicians, comedians and artists to help keep our members entertained, even while we do the tough work of standing up against continued abuses of government power. Join Us in D.C. for the ACLU Membership Conference

Plans for the ACLU's 2008 Membership Conference are already off to a great start. With Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David H. Souter all confirmed to speak, conference attendees will have the opportunity to hear from one-third of the United States Supreme Court.

Attendees can expect a wide variety of high caliber speakers. A few speaker highlights include:

  • Justice Arthur Chaskalson, a former Chief Justice in South Africa, is a leading jurist in constitutional and human rights issues.
  • Ariel Dorfman has been called a "literary grandmaster" (Time) and "one of the greatest living Latin American novelists" (Newsweek).
  • John Hutson, a retired United States Navy rear admiral, attorney and former Judge Advocate General of the Navy, is a passionate advocate against torture and the abuse of prisoners in U.S. military custody.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg! We're confirming new speakers, presenters and performers every day. Conference attendees can look forward to hearing from renowned experts on civil liberties topics that have become all too familiar to us in a post 9/11 world - government surveillance, torture, the suspension of habeas corpus, and increased government intrusion into private matters - as well as first-hand accounts from ACLU clients, who have fought to claim their constitutionally protected rights.

Check out our conference Web site now and regularly - www.aclu.org/conference - for an updated list of speakers, registration details and other program highlights.

See you in Washington, June 8-10!

CORRECTION:: In a previous version of this post, Lionel Sosa was listed as a speaker. Due to an unforeseen conflict, Mr. Sosa is now unable to attend.
