Students' American Flag T-Shirts Are Protected Speech

Last week, five students at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Calif., were sent home on Cinco de Mayo for wearing T-shirts bearing the American flag. The students were reportedly sent home after Vice Principal Miguel Rodriguez told them the shirts posed a "safety issue" on a day celebrating Mexican heritage.

The Problem of Prolonged Incarceration of Immigrants

Bertha Mejia is a 53-year-old grandmother who fled political violence and sexual abuse in her native El Salvador as a girl. She has four U.S. citizen children and is the primary caretaker for her 9-year-old grandson, Pablo. The victim of rape at the hands of her employer, Ms. Mejia has a strong case for a "U-visa," a type of visa for victims of crime who cooperate with law enforcement. The police have already certified that Ms. Mejia is a victim who has assisted the police in apprehending the perpetrator.

San Francisco's Police Chief George Gascón roundly offended many Muslim-Americans last month when he suggested that retrofitting San Francisco's Hall of Justice had made the structure safe from both earthquakes and Yemeni or Afghan San Franciscans who might want to park a van in front of the building and blow it up.
