What We Think About Attacks on the Proposed Islamic Cultural Center in Lower ManhattanMake sure to check out the latest statement from the ACLU and New York Civil Liberties Union defending religious freedom in the face of opposition to the proposed Islamic cultural center in lower Manhattan. As the nation’s premier defender of civil liberties, we feel strongly that voices of tolerance and adherence to our Constitution are critical during times like this. Religious freedom is one of America's most fundamental liberties, and a central principle upon which our nation was founded. For hundreds of years, even in the face of opposition, religious pluralism and tolerance have sustained and helped to define our nation. Still today, we must continue to boldly oppose religious discrimination rooted in cultural stereotyping, and resist those who seek to trade away our most precious values for political advantage. In the face of all this controversy, Americans' commitment to religious liberty must remain unshakeable. If we sacrifice this right for political expediency and allow discrimination, we all lose.
