Twin Cities: Police StateScary news has been coming out of Minneapolis since Sunday, where police have been raiding homes and making mass arrests. Glenn Greenwald has been all over the story. He writes: Beginning [Sunday] night, St. Paul was the most militarized I have ever seen an American city be, even more so than Manhattan in the week of 9/11 — with troops of federal, state and local law enforcement agents marching around with riot gear, machine guns, and tear gas cannisters, shouting military chants and marching in military formations. Humvees and law enforcement officers with rifles were posted on various buildings and balconies. Numerous protesters and observers were tear gassed and injured. His column features audio, video and photos of Democracy Now's Amy Goodman being arrested for "conspiracy to riot."

It's amazing how many people always side with law enforcement in cases like this where there is overwhelming evidence of abuse. The Founding Fathers would have been terrified if they knew that so much of the American public gives the benefit of the doubt to the government. The default position is always liberty, always the individual over the government.

"Today we need a nation of minute men; citizens who are not only prepared to take up arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as a basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom. The cause of liberty, the cause of American, cannot succeed with any lesser effort."
-- President John F. Kennedy, January 29, 1961

I side with citizens by default, and I'm very wary of governmental use of force, but Amy Goodman was in the wrong -- at least according to the video posted. She tried to push her way past a police line. Sorry, but your civil liberties don't include the right to physically shove past a line of police officers.

Funny how there's only photos of Amy's attempt to riot, but none of "with troops of federal, state and local law enforcement agents marching around with riot gear, machine guns, and tear gas canisters, shouting military chants and marching in military formations."
I bet someone is just making this stuff up.
