Romero Letter in Times

In response to the Gitmo white wash op-ed yesterday. Here's Anthony's letter:
Colonel Davis finds fault with critics who compare Guantánamo to totalitarian gulags, and responds by extolling the prison’s culturally appropriate

Bruce Fein, conservative constitutional scholar, slams Vice President Cheney. Late post on my part.

Playing It Safe...And Missing the Point

Not to knock my adopted hometown paper, but the Washington Post editorial board gets under my skin sometimes. I guess in an attempt to differentiate themselves from the Times, they consistently hew to a quasi-centrist middle-of-the-road position on national security issues. Judiciary Subpoenas on NSA Spying

By Gabe Rottman, Legislative Counsel, ACLU Washington Legislative Office at 2:58pm
It's now official. Subpoenas to White House, Cheney's office, the Justice Department and the NSC. From the AP:
The committee wants documents that might shed light on internal squabbles within the administration over the legality of the program, said a congressional offi

Conservatism is About Limits

By Gabe Rottman, Legislative Counsel, ACLU Washington Legislative Office at 7:27pm
So at the rally, in addition to being able to speak to most of the other principals, I had the honor of speaking to David Keene, president of the American Conservative Union. I always like chatting with conservatives like Mr. Keene, because they tell it like it is. As he said, he doesn't believe that there's any ill-will on the part of those in

Legislative Prospects

By Gabe Rottman, Legislative Counsel, ACLU Washington Legislative Office at 6:56pm
So, in addition to Mr. Keene, Reverend Kilmer and a number of other speakers, I got to interview Senators Dodd and Cardin and Representatives Nadler and Kucinich. I was especially interested in legislative prospects for either habeas restoration or Gitmo closure in the House and the Senate. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to speak with Senator Leahy, thoug

Debrief

So, the liveblogging wasn't quite as prodigious as I'd hoped, mainly because I was actually interviewing most of the speakers. Hope to have those videos linkable soon. In any case, here're a couple of choice shots from the rally, which was, by all accounts, a resounding success. Congrats to all the organizers, and thanks to the hundreds of people who braved Washington in late June to take a stand for due process and basic fairness. Dodd & Kucinich
