The death penalty is the ultimate denial of civil liberties. In the past 35 years, 129 inmates were found to be innocent and released from death row. The ACLU Capital Punishment Project is fighting for the end of the death penalty by supporting moratorium and repeal movements through public education and advocacy. We are engaged in systemic reform of the death penalty process, and case-specific litigation highlighting some of its fundamental flaws.

ST. LOUIS, MO--The American Civil Liberties Union today renewed its call for clemency in the case of a mentally retarded man here whose death sentence was put on hold by the United States Supreme Court last night just hours before he was scheduled to be executed.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The American Civil Liberties Union today denounced Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating's refusal to grant a 30-day reprieve to Wanda Jean Allen, who was executed last night despite the fact that she was deprived of adequate legal representation.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Citing a "stunning combination" of concerns about bias and injustice, the American Civil Liberties Union today urged clemency for a severely mentally impaired African-American lesbian who is scheduled to be executed on Jan. 11.
