White v. Martz Complaint (02/14/2002)
ACLU lawsuit against the State of Montana and seven of its counties alleging that defendants had failed to adequately fund and supervise county indigent defense programs. Other court papers are attached.

Tesmer v. Granholm (03/01/2000)
In 2000, the ACLU's Michigan affiliate challenged a state law prohibiting the appointment of appellate counsel to indigent criminal defendants who wished to appeal their conviction to the Michigan Court of Appeals despite the fact that they had pled guilty to the charges against them. Plaintiffs won at the trial level but lost on appeal to the Sixth Circuit. The Sixth Circuit subsequently heard the case en banc and upheld the lower court decision declaring the law unconstitutional. The case is now before the Supreme Court.
