Use Your Camera to Fight Discrimination!

Document Date: April 14, 2011

Did you know that it’s legal to fire someone just for being gay? Sad, but true: In 29 states gay, lesbian and bisexual employees can be fired, denied employment or denied promotions because of their sexual orientation. It’s true in 37 states if you’re transgender.

But there’s a law currently before Congress that could change that. It’s called the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and it would protect all Americans from job discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Polls have consistently shown that more than two-thirds of Americans support these kinds of protections.

ENDA was first introduced in 1994 but, despite massive public support, it has not been passed by Congress. We’re asking for YOUR HELP to let Congress know that it’s finally time to pass ENDA and end legal discrimination against LGBT Americans.

What you can do:

Make a short video letting Congress know that you want them to pass ENDA and why. If you have a friend, family member or co-worker that you care about who needs this protection, make a video about that. If you have experienced or witnessed discrimination against LGBT people in the workplace, make a video about that. Or if you just think it’s wrong for someone to be fired simply for being who they are, make a video about that.

Once you’re done, upload your video to YouTube as a response to our video. Or just upload it to your account and send us a link.

If you’re not the video type, you can still help pass ENDA. Take a photo of yourself, your friends, your co-workers showing that you support end, then send it to us.

We’ll post our favorite photos and videos to our blog and use them to support our efforts to get ENDA through Congress. So pick up your camera and start shooting!
