More about the ACLU

Equality is up to us. No one who cares about fairness and dignity for LGBT people should let the public attention on marriage for same-sex couples pass by without taking action.

The U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down a Texas law criminalizing sexual intimacy for same-sex partners was a pivotal moment in the LGBT rights movement. Now, we have the same legal right to form relationships as heterosexuals. The Supreme Court decision was followed by a Massachusetts court decision opening the door for marriage to same-sex couples.

These great wins, however, do not mean that every state, or business, or school must include LGBT people in equal opportunity policies or treat LGBT relationships fairly. Indeed, several states have recently passed constitutional amendments denying marriage to same-sex couples.

This proves that every court decision or legislative action in our favor must be matched with public education by individuals and organizations to prevent anti-gay backlash. Good legal decisions are important to ensure our equality, but public support is also essential.

This web site provides tools for you to reach out to your neighbors, schools, employers, and elected officials and help them understand that fairness for LGBT people is the right thing for America. There is also information on how to protect your relationship and family and how to share your experiences to illustrate the real harm of discrimination. The information, helpful hints, step-by-step instructions, and resources can be used right now to protect LGBT people and our rights.
