Even though our country was founded on the principal of equality for all people, the federal government has stubbornly refused to acknowledge or do anything about the rampant discrimination that LGBT people face daily in this country. While world leaders across the globe have begun to acknowledge that LGBT people deserve anti-discrimination protection, the U.S. has done nothing to insure that LGBT people receive equal treatment in employment, housing or public accommodations.
Rather, the federal government relies on tired stereotypes
and myths to actively discriminate against LGBT people in
the military, the nation's largest employer. The military's
"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy of discharging any LGBT member
who is honest about his or her sexual orientation has cost
American taxpayers millions of dollars to enforce, while unnecessarily
preventing countless men and women from serving their country.
You can do something about the government's poor treatment of LGBT people by educating yourself on the issues and letting your representatives know how you feel. Take advantage of the following tools to get your voice heard.
What the ACLU Has to Say:
The ACLU regularly advises congress on issues and legislation that affects LGBT people. Take a look at what the ACLU has said.
