ACLU Resources
Below are links to ACLU resources that can help you in your
effort to get a safe schools training. Many of them, plus
additional resources, are included in the complete "Making
Schools Safe" manual (links below).
- Preventing
Harassment and Protecting Free Speech in Schools.
This fact sheet explains how it’s possible to adopt
policies that adequately address harassment and protect
free speech.
- "Making
Schools Safe": The ACLU created this anti-harassment
training program and the tools you need to get your school
to host it. If you can't download a pdf file and need
us to send you a copy, please contact
the ACLU.
- Sample
Letter Offering Training: This sample letter to school
officials introduces the concept of an anti-harassment
training program and explains how it can be implemented.
The text can be copied and/or adapted.
- Statistics
on Anti-LGBT Harassment: The ACLU compiled statistics
on anti-LGBT harassment from a number of surveys and put
them together on one page. This factual information is
an effective way to demonstrate the nationwide problem
of harassment.
- The Cost of Harassment: This short piece offers an overview of student harassment cases. It demonstrates that schools can get into legal and financial trouble if they ignore anti-LGBT harassment.
- Sample
Survey for Faculty and Staff: This sample survey can
be used before the workshop to get a better sense of the
experiences of the participants. Information from the
survey will help you tailor your own workshop.
- Legal
Overview for Attorney Presenter: This ACLU memo provides
all the relevant legal information necessary for the legal
segment of the workshop.
- Frequently-Asked
Legal Questions: These frequently asked questions
and answers addresses a range of LGBT legal issues in
schools.
- Sample
Agenda & Lesson Plan: This outline from the ACLU's
Making Schools Safe manual offers a proposed agenda for
the presentation and content for each presenter.
- Know Your Rights! A quick guide for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender high school students.
Safe Schools Resources
It is the specific mission of these organizations to make schools safer for LGBT youth. Their websites offer nuts-and-bolts resources for starting GSAs, passing safe schools policies, and implementing safe schools trainings.
