Disparities in the Criminal Justice System - Native Americans in
South Dakota are severely overrepresented in the state's prison population,
and face significant disadvantages at all stages of the criminal justice
system when compared with non-Native Americans. This is substantiated
by reports conducted by at least 3 separate reports. p. 83-84
Voter Disfranchisement - ACLU lawsuits have shed light on decades
of disfranchisement against Native Americans in South Dakota. Native
Americans have been prevented from holding elected office, and continue
to face several forms of voting disfranchisement. p. 127-128
Racial Discrimination in Schools - After the ACLU filed suit against
the Winner School District for discrimination against Native students,
the district agreed to a settlement. Terms of the settlement include
hiring an ombudsman and an education expert to improve Native students'
success in schools. p. 156-157
