Major Gifts Officer, Northern Virginia

The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia seeks an independent, committed, energetic and outgoing person whose primary responsibility will be to cultivate and solicit major donors. 
 
Working closely with the Executive Director, the Associate Director, and the Development Committee of the Board of Directors, the Major Gifts Officer is responsible for planning, supervising and executing the affiliate’s major gifts programs and other complementary fundraising and donor cultivation strategies that will enable the organization to reach our annual and long-range development goals. 
 
Location:
The Major Gifts Officer must be able to travel, but is expected to work primarily from the Northern Virginia area. The ACLU of Virginia’s main office is in Richmond.
 
Responsibilities:
 
Major Gifts Program:  Coordinate and carry out plans to identify, cultivate and solicit major donors, especially in one-on-one visits, but also to conduct solicitations in conjunction with other staff, board members, and national ACLU personnel.
 
Planned Giving: Work with the National ACLU Office of Planned Giving to devise and implement strategies for bequests, annuities and other planned giving options available to ACLU supporters in Virginia.
 
Donor Database Maintenance: Must become proficient in ACLU financial rules and donor data entry systems.
 
Events and Materials:  Assist with the coordination of fundraising events that affect relationships with major donors and the production of materials used in the solicitation process.
 
Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and principles of the ACLU.
  • Successful track record of identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individual major donors.
  • Experience in non-profit fundraising focusing on securing individual major gifts, particularly for advocacy or community-based organizations.
  • High energy, strong interpersonal skills, and comfort working with donors, board members, and volunteers.
  • Excellent organization and administrative skills, and ability to follow through on assignments with minimal direct supervision.
  • A demonstrated ability to write clearly and effectively with experience developing successful written donor communications and marketing materials.
  • Computer proficiency, including list and database management.
  • Ability to travel throughout the state and to maintain a work schedule that may include evening and weekend commitments.
 
Compensation:
Salary commensurate with experience, plus excellent benefits, including paid vacation and sick leave, health and dental insurance, life and disability coverage and retirement benefits.
 
Organizational and Financial Facts:
The ACLU of Virginia has a staff of nine and a budget of approximately $900,000.
