HEALTHY YOUTH CAMPAIGN COORDINATOR

The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina (ACLU-NC) seeks applicants for a fulltime campaign coordinator to complete a temporary project, expected to be completed by mid-summer 2010. The ACLU-NC is the state affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union. The Healthy Youth Campaign Coordinator will coordinate all aspects of the ACLU-NC’s efforts to advocate for responsible, medically and factually accurate, scientifically based sex education curricula in North Carolina’s public schools. The Healthy Youth Campaign Coordinator will work closely with local coalition partners and will develop relationships with pediatricians, gynecologists, obstetricians, social workers, educators, local politicians and school officials, and others who may be helpful in ensuring that appropriate comprehensive sex education policies, training and curricula are adopted and implemented at the start of the 2010-2011 academic year.

The Healthy Youth Campaign Coordinator will work under the direction and supervision of the ACLU-NC’s Legislative Counsel. Duties include:

  • Networking and strategizing with medical professionals, social workers, educators, local politicians and other interested parties in targeted school districts and engaging them as allies in the ACLU-NC’s Healthy Youth Campaign.
  • Developing and implementing plans for targeting school districts that need guidance and advising them on which curricula will meet the requirements of the Healthy Youth Act, signed into law in North Carolina in June 2009.
  • Coordinating educational outreach with public school officials, school board members, SHAC committees, curriculum coordinators, and other decision makers.
  • Working with, and expanding, established volunteer groups to coordinate efforts on this issue.
  • Preparing talking points and informational pieces for distribution.
  • Meticulously tracking all expenses pertaining to this project and maintaining records of how funds are used, achievements, progress, setbacks, etc. The Healthy Youth Campaign Coordinator will be responsible for submitting a written report on this project once it is completed.
  • Writing articles for the ACLU-NC’s quarterly newsletter to update our members on this project, and writing reports for the Board of Directors and for other uses, as directed by the Legislative Counsel.
  • Represent the ACLU-NC in a professional manner within the organization and externally.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the Legislative Counsel.

Qualifications:

  • Must support full reproductive rights as well as the overall mission of the ACLU.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of effective grassroots or political organizing experience, including development, planning and implementation of grassroots strategies required.
  • Strong work ethic, highly motivated, and ability to work independently are vitally important.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of reproductive health and sex education.
  • Experience working with and building coalitions; excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience planning and conducting trainings and facilitating meetings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel within North Carolina and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Current driver’s license and access to a car are essential.
  • Ability to produce consistent, professional, quality work; ability to learn quickly.
  • Proficient computer skills, particularly Word, email, social networking, blogging, and the use of listservs.
  • College degree required, advanced degree in relevant field or significant relevant work experience a plus.

Compensation:
Salary commensurate with skills and experience, plus reimbursement for travel and other work-related expenses. Generous benefits package and paid leave available. Expected length of project is 6 - 9 months.
