Career Opportunity: Paralegal

Position Overview

The ACLU Foundation of Southern California has an opening for a full-time Paralegal to work with staff attorneys at the ACLU's office in Los Angeles.

Job Responsibilities

- Prepare and execute filings of a variety of legal documents, including briefs, motions, court forms, petitions, subpoenas and discovery documents;
-Draft correspondence, notices, declarations, requests and orders;
-Contact clerks of the court, state and local agencies, etc. to obtain information;
-Draft correspondence, notices, declarations, requests and orders;
-Assist attorneys with legal and other research, such as cite-checking, internet searches;
-Assist with the distribution of documents to co-counsel and other parties working in collaborations with attorneys;
-Maintain files; maintain case calendar;
-Face-to-face client or witness interviews;
-Word Processing and other general clerical and administrative duties;
-Ability to analyze legal documents and forms for accuracy;
-Ability to prioritize and work under a tight schedule
-In depth knowledge of legal terminology and principles;
-Other duties assigned as needed.

Qualifications

-Knowledge of filing procedures and requirements for all courts, including state, federal and courts of appeal, and experience researching all courts' rules;
-Minimum three years experience highly desirable;
-Paralegal certificate desirable;
-Excellent typing and proofing skills; WordPerfect for Windows required;
-Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;
-Ability to work well under pressure, including some evenings and weekends;
-Ability to set/change priorities according to deadline requirements;
-Ability to work well with others, in a collegial and diverse environment;
-Ability to take initiative, problem-solve, multi-task, and work independently;
-Fluency in Spanish desirable;
-Experience with public interest organizations desirable.

Compensation

Salary is commensurate with experience. Benefits include generous health, dental, and life insurance plans, as well as vacation and sick leave policies.
