OVERVIEW:
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution. The ACLU has made an unambiguous and unwavering commitment to the importance of online communications as a central and essential element in the success of its mission. The organization places great emphasis on the role of online communications in framing the debate on its issues, building support, and increasing the impact of its work.
The Affiliate Support Department seeks applicants for an Affiliate Online Support Internship beginning in the Fall of 2009 located in New York, NY.
The Affiliate Support Department has set up a Community Action Network (CAN) program for ACLU affiliates in order to coordinate and streamline email communication with ACLU members and supporters. In the CAN program, affiliates share in one mailing list and coordinate their weekly messages with the National Office on relevant topics. We are seeking a qualified intern to assist in all aspects of this program.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:
Interns will be able to gain firsthand knowledge of how our stories are developed and told through electronic channels. Interns will work closely with the Affiliate Online Support Team as well as other departments (IT, Online Marketing Team) to learn the various aspects of the online production process.
A commitment of 12 weeks is requested, although the specific length and terms of the internship will be negotiated when an offer is made. This internship is unpaid, with the opportunity to earn school credit, if applicable.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist on various aspects of email production and deployment.
- Set up landing pages for alerts, surveys, and events using Convio application.
- Troubleshoot and QA (Quality Assurance) for various modules of the application
- Run and interpret reports.
- Facilitate email performance reports.
- Proof and edit affiliate emails and training materials.
- Review and modify affiliate templates.
- Assist in organizing monthly meetings and training calls.
- Perform other duties integral to the department’s function.
The internship may also include assisting in the production of a project from inception to launch under the supervision of our Affiliate Online Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Undergraduate/Graduate students.
- Skilled in using HTML editing software (ability to interpret HTML code without help of a WYSIWYG editor).
- Experience with editing website pages.
- Basic understanding of Web and email marketing. Experience working with an email ASP preferred (i.e. Convio etc.).
- Basic understanding of databases and data flow (queries, sync, groups, suppressions).
- Basic skills with Excel and Access a plus.
- Strong research, writing and communications skills.
- The ability to work independently.
- An interest in political science/civil liberties, the legislative process, communication and marketing on the Web is preferred.
