Advocacy Department Internship
Internships at the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU)
Internships at the New York Civil Liberties Union provide students with a great
opportunity to organize and campaign around issues of civil liberties about
which they are most passionate. These internships are intended to provide students
with the knowledge, tools, skills, and experience that will help them in future
challenges, professional goals, and careers in activism, organizing, law, civil
rights, and more.
The Advocacy Department
The Advocacy Department develops and executes public advocacy campaigns to further
the NYCLU’s mission to defend and promote civil liberties and civil rights
throughout New York State. The department seeks to influence public policy through
grassroots organizing, public education, coalition building, online activism
and direct lobbying of lawmakers. It will work with the NYCLU’s chapters
and regional offices to implement statewide campaigns aimed at positioning lawmakers
to reject attacks on civil liberties.
The Internship
We expect a great deal from our Interns. Interns will have a challenging and
diverse experience that will contribute greatly to the mission of the NYCLU.
Advocacy interns will work on a number of campaigns in different capacities.
All interns will meet regularly at the NYCLU offices with NYCLU staff and participate
in the NYCLU’s Summer Brown Bag Lunch series which gives interns the opportunity
to discuss various civil rights and civil liberties issues with national experts
and New York City-based advocates.
Responsibilities:
- Educate and distribute information to New Yorkers on civil rights and civil
liberties issues at events and as part of street teams throughout the five
boroughs.
- Sign up New Yorker’s for the NYCLU’s E- Activism email list
at events and as part of street teams throughout the five boroughs.
- Build and maintain the Advocacy Department’s database of youth, community
and religious organizations.
- Perform administrative duties, such as mailing public education materials
to area organizations.
NYCLU Advocacy Department internships are open to undergraduate
students.
