The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a national not-for-profit
public interest organization, invites qualified candidates to apply for the
full-time position of State Legislative Assistant. The State
Legislative Assistant will work in the organization’s Washington Legislative
Office under the supervision of the State Legislative Counsel.
The State Legislative Assistant will assist the State Legislative Counsel in
writing and editing documents, tracking state-level legislation, researching
policy and legislative issues, communicating with ACLU affiliates and state-level
elected officials, and providing logistical support for State Legislative Counsel
and Assistant State Legislative Counsel.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Research, write, edit and coordinate projects for the State Legislative
Counsel, including articles, letters, publications, presentations, and interdepartmental
documents.
- Conduct in-depth policy and legislative research.
- Monitor state legislative developments by reviewing electronic newsletters
devoted to state legislative activity.
- Draft memoranda or policy documents under State Legislative Counsel supervision.
- Coordinate with other ACLU departments, programs and affiliates as well
as coalition partners regarding state legislative matters.
- Support State Legislative Counsel at off and on-site events including affiliate
visits, coalition meetings, and conferences.
- Assist State Legislative Counsel with administrative matters including coordinating
and scheduling meetings, conference calls, travel arrangements, conference
attendance, appointments, correspondence and telephone inquiries.
- Work with other ACLU staff to serve the Washington Legislative Office’s
needs as necessary.
- Performs other duties as required by the State Legislative Counsel.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or two years of related experience preferred.
- Minimum of one year writing and research experience preferred.
- Outstanding writing skills, including ability to adapt writing style as
appropriate and communicate complex civil liberties issues clearly and concisely.
- Ability to manage several complex projects simultaneously, often under strict
deadlines.
- Knowledge of the legislative process and current state-level liberties issues.
- Excellent research skills.
- Ability to work well within a team.
- Commitment to ACLU goals and a strong interest in current state-level civil
liberties issues.
COMPENSATION:
The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package,
commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU compensation
scale.
