OVERVIEW:
The American Civil Liberties Union, a national not-for-profit public interest organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights, invites applications for the full-time position of Communications Assistant to work in the organization’s Washington, DC, office under the direct supervision of the Director of Legislative Communications.

Additionally, the Communications Assistant will initiate, coordinate and assist with a variety of projects for the Director of the Communications Department.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Significant word processing with consistent and accurate document proofreading.
  • Retrieve and distribute public information to ACLU staff, provide assistance with conducting media research and prepare materials for ACLU website.
  • Assist in the preparation of budgetary documents and the processing of invoices.
  • Assist with the coordination of meetings, conferences and press events.
  • Organize departmental travel and scheduling.
  • Record and transcribe meeting notes to ensure proper dissemination of information throughout the Washington office.
  • Maintain statistics, set up databases and organize electronic and paper filing systems.
  • Provide efficient and courteous telephone coverage including call screening and messaging.
  • Handle faxing, copying and mail processing duties for department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 2 years administrative experience.
  • Superior numerical aptitude preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet strict deadlines and perform under pressure.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office and Internet applications.
  • Must be a self-starter, take initiative and be able to work independently.
  • Demonstrated interest in civil liberties/civil rights preferred.

COMPENSATION:
The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU compensation scale.
