CAPITAL PUNISHMENT ORGANIZERS
The American Civil Liberties Union of Montana (ACLU-MT) invites applications
for Capital Punishment organizers to be based in Helena and to work statewide.
Through a statewide program of public advocacy and public policy work, the
Montana Abolition Coalition and coalition member ACLU-MT sponsor a program focused
on the unfairness and arbitrariness of capital punishment while working toward
its ultimate goal of abolishing the death penalty.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction and supervision of the ACLU-MT’s director and the
Montana Abolition Coalition’s Coordinator, the Capital Punishment Organizer
will play an important role in public education and advocacy regarding the death
penalty. Primary responsibilities will be:
- Work with ACLU’s constituency and other coalition partner groups to
organize and mobilize their members. ACLU’s Capital Punishment Organizer
will be targeting work with Montana’s tribal nations.
- Identify important and persuasive issues within partner groups.
- Assist in the development of public education and outreach materials.
- Assist in the development and implementation of strategies to mobilize coalition
partners to eliminate the death penalty in Montana
- Conduct extensive outreach within partner organizations
- Recruit, train, and manage volunteers to participate in local events, letter
to the editor campaigns, opinion editorials, statewide tours and other Coalition
activities.
- Assist in the planning and execution of special events and campaigns designed
to educate the public about the flaws in the criminal justice system, and
to build support for efforts to eliminate the death penalty.
- Represent the Coalition before community groups
- Maintain organized records of public education and advocacy activities
- Assist with strengthening and nurturing alliances against capital punishment
with diverse membership including American Indian tribes, communities of faith,
victims’ rights organizations, and other interest groups.
Legislative work:
- Assist in Coalition activities before, during and after the legislative
session.
- Support Coalition efforts to advance the legislative agenda.
- Recruit and manage volunteers to participate in legislative lobbying activities.
- Assist in coordinating hearing preparation and preparing testimony.
- Recruit, prepare and assist other spokespersons to present testimony before
legislative bodies and to individual legislators.
Other activities as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong commitment to and understanding of the Coalition’s objectives
regarding capital punishment.
- A bachelor’s degree is preferred, but not required.
- A minimum of 2 years experience with grassroots organizing and outreach
education, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- A willingness and ability to speak in public and to facilitate meetings
and trainings.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills.
- Attention to detail and strong work ethic.
- A willingness to travel within the state and to maintain a flexible work
schedule.
- Prior experience working with tribal nations or a member of an American
Indian tribe is preferred.
Salary commensurate with experience.
