Development Department

The Roger Baldwin Foundation of the ACLU of Illinois, the nation’s premier public interest organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights and the expansion of human rights, seeks a full-time Grant Writer for its Development Department. The Grant Writer is responsible for researching, writing, submitting and following up all grant requests to Foundations and Corporations that have funding priorities matching the legal, advocacy and communications programs of the Roger Baldwin Foundation of ACLU.

Responsibilities:

  • Working closely with the Director of Development and program staff, prepare and submit grant proposals and reports to foundations, corporate and individual funders.
  • Synthesize complex information into clear and concise language.
  • Write letters, summaries, follow-up reports, and e-mails to cultivate support.
  • Conduct foundation and corporate research.
  • Assist with fund raising strategy and the development of project budgets.
  • Handle other writing assignments including providing editorial support for the annual report, and quarterly newsletter as well as Board meeting minutes.
  • Work with Development Director on other Fund raising projects, including the annual dinner.

Qualifications:

  • Outstanding writing skills, including ability to communicate complex civil liberties issues clearly and concisely, and ability to adapt writing style as appropriate.
  • Ability to manage several complex writing projects simultaneously, often under strict deadline pressure.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Excellent research skills, preferably with experience in researching foundation and corporate funders.
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years’ experience in development, communications, or journalism preferred.
  • Commitment to the goals of the ACLU.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary is commensurate with experience, within the parameters of the ACLU compensation scale. Excellent benefits package provided.
