INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

BACKGROUND:
The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the nation's foremost defenders
of civil liberties and civil rights. Founded in 1951 as the New York affiliate
of the American Civil Liberties Union, the NYCLU is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan
organization with seven chapters and 48,000 members statewide.
The NYCLU is a proven guardian of New Yorkers’ First Amendment rights,
including the rights of filmmakers and photographers to freely perform their
craft. Recently, it led a grassroots campaign that persuaded New York City to
revise proposed rules that would have severely restricted a wide range of casual
photography and videotaping in public places.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The NYCLU is seeking an intern this summer to lend a creative touch and professional
polish to the production of video content for its Web site. The video production
intern would work with the organization’s Communications and Advocacy
departments to create short films that highlight the NYCLU’s work and
educate the public on a variety of civil rights and civil liberties-related
issues. The intern will play an important role in crafting the organization’s
message and attracting new members. This is an exciting opportunity for a filmmaking
student to build a portfolio and gain work experience in a friendly, fast-paced
environment.
The ideal candidate must possess a thorough knowledge of all facets of video
production, including script-writing, and production and editing techniques.
Knowledge of civil rights and civil liberties-related issues is a plus. This
is an unpaid internship, but a $200 stipend will be provided. The intern will
be expected to work two days a week on a flexible schedule.
Responsibilities:
- Conceptualize and produce a variety of brief videos explaining the NYCLU’s
advocacy campaigns and positions on the issues. These videos will be posted
on the NYCLU’s Web site and widely distributed to advocacy groups, blogs
and other media outlets. They will take a variety of forms, including:
- Interviews with NYCLU staff and clients
- Footage of NYCLU events
- Documentary-style shorts
- Creative shorts
The ideal candidate will have:
- Proficiency with Final Cut Pro
- Experience creating short videos
- Experience interviewing people
- A diplomatic touch and a sense of humor
- Access to a good-quality video camera is a plus
The internship runs from June 16 through Aug. 15. Please send a resume
and cover letter to mcummings@nyclu.org.
Include "Video Production Internship" in the subject
line. Please be prepared to provide samples of your work.
The NYCLU is an affirmative action/equal opportunity
employer and encourages women, people of color, persons with disabilities and
LGBTQ people to apply.
