The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a national not-for-profit
public interest organization, invites applications for the full-time position
of Legislative Communications Associate to work in the organization’s
Washington National Office under the supervision of the Senior Communications
Associate and Deputy Director for Legislative Communications.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct outreach to media outlets utilizing print, broadcast, internet outlets,
blogs, and journalists within those mediums to promote specific civil liberties
issues and ACLU news.
- Participate in departmental meetings to strategize, prepare and finalize
news releases.
- Draft news releases, media advisories and other documents/correspondence
for distribution to news media.
- Respond quickly and accurately to press calls.
- Keep abreast of and monitor news items focusing on the ACLU and ACLU issues.
- Coordinate and participate in meetings with journalists and/or news organizations.
- Perform related duties as directed to communicate the ACLU’s message
and viewpoint on ACLU issues.
- Perform other duties assigned.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree and a minimum of two years of relevant experience required
in the field of public relations, communications, journalism or media relations.
- Excellent research skills, media research a plus.
- Excellent writing and proofreading skills.
- Demonstrated ability to produce clear and concise materials including the
ability to communicate complex civil liberties issues; ability to adapt writing
style as appropriate.
- Working knowledge of MS Office and the Internet.
- Demonstrated ability and experience interacting with reporters.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize;
meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment and exhibit grace under pressure.
- Must be self-motivated and possess the ability to work both independently
and as part of a team.
- Must possess the drive and determination to see work through to completion.
- Interest in civil liberties issues and civil rights required.
COMPENSATION:
The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package,
commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU compensation
scale.
