MAJOR GIFTS OFFICER

The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Northern California (ACLU-NC)
seeks applicants for a full-time Major Gifts Officer. The Major Gifts Officer
will work directly with the Director of Development, Major Gifts staff, Development
Committee of the ACLU-NC Board of Directors and other volunteers to plan and
manage the ACLU-NC Major Gifts Campaign.
Job Description:
- Campaign Management
Under supervision of the Director of Development, the Major Gifts Officer
(“Officer”) participates in all facets of managing, implementing
and evaluating the ACLU Major Gifts Campaign. The Officer assists in creating
and carrying out the development plan for the year. The Officer has primary
responsibility for implementation of the plan in relation to the renewal and
upgrading of donors at the $1,000-$5,000 level, while coordinating efforts
for the full base of major donors. In addition, the Officer manages a portfolio
of significant donors and prospects in the $2,500 and above range.
The Major Gifts Officer organizes and leads meetings of the Major Gifts Team,
the team of staff managing donor portfolios, and provides individualized support
for staff managing donor portfolios. For the next two years, the Officer will
also help coordinate and integrate annual fund efforts with the ACLU-NC’s
capital campaign as well as with national ACLU’s strategies for individual
donors.
The Major Gifts Officer organizes campaign kickoff and training events, writes
and produces solicitor training materials and campaign progress reports, as
well as tracks volunteer solicitor progress, donor activities and communications.
The Officer also provides reports and other assessments for program evaluation
and organizes an annual department evaluation and goal-setting session.
- Development Committee and Solicitors
The Major Gifts Officer helps to recruit, train and support volunteer fundraising
solicitors for major individual gifts. The Officer orients and trains solicitors
before and throughout the campaign, interacting with them frequently to provide
ongoing support throughout a campaign. With the Director of Development, the
Officer staffs the Development Committee of the ACLU-NC Board of Directors
and on occasion leads Development Committee meetings (with the Committee Chair).
The Officer compiles statistical information for periodic monitoring and evaluation
of fundraising results.
- Donor Relations
The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for the identification, cultivation,
solicitation and stewardship of major donors.
The Major Gifts Officer collects and maintains data on individual gift prospects,
including collecting and recording information from volunteer solicitors about
prospects and donors. The Officer works with the Director of Development to
develop and implement a plan for prospect identification.
The Officer collaboratively develops and organizes an annual cultivation plan,
which includes donor cultivation events and communications. The Officer has
primary responsibility for the annual major donor appreciation dinner, which
requires working with volunteers, staff and/or consultants to plan the event,
arrange logistics, develop the program and manage the budget. The Officer
also plans and organizes solicitor recognition events and occasional campaign-specific
events.
The Major Gifts Officer produces personalized mail appeals, proposals for
individual support, and responses to individual requests for information.
The Officer also writes articles for the website, annual reports and print
newsletters.
The Officer oversees gift processing and assures accurate production of acknowledgment
letters, gift receipts and pledge reminders. The Officer works with the Finance
Director to facilitate complex gift transfers, such as stock gifts.
- Supervision
The Major Gifts Officer supervises a full-time Development Coordinator/ Membership
Assistant and a part-time Development Assistant.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of three years experience with individual-giving fundraising campaigns,
including campaign management, solicitor support, donor research and development
publications.
- Knowledge of fundraising software (Raiser’s Edge and/or PIDI Donor
Direct preferred), experience with donor database management and gift processing
systems.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience working with
board members, donors, volunteers and program staff on collaborative activities
- Experience working with multi-racial and multi-generational staff and volunteers
a plus.
- Experience with organizing and managing the logistics of development events.
- Ability to work well under pressure and to be both flexible and highly organized
in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to civil liberties and civil rights.
Compensation:
Salary based on experience. Excellent benefits include four weeks paid vacation;
