We Are All Troy Davis: End the Death Penalty!

The state of Georgia executed Troy Davis in September 2011, despite serious concerns that he was wrongly convicted of killing a police officer in 1989. This case makes clear that the death penalty system in the United States is broken beyond repair. It is arbitrary, discriminatory and comes at an enormous cost to taxpayers, and it must end.

Idaho: Join us in standing up against the death penalty!

This Friday, the State of Idaho will execute its first death row inmate since 1994. State sponsored killing of inmates violates their 8th Amendment right guaranteeing them protection from cruel and unusual punishment. We ask that you join with us to fight against this unreasonable sentence and stand in solidarity that Idaho should execute justice, NOT people.

Paul Rhoades is scheduled to be executed at 8am at the Idaho State Penitentiary, South Boise Prison Complex this Friday. The ACLU of Idaho will be joining other demonstrators that morning to show our support in stopping the execution and abolishing the death penalty.

We encourage you to reach out and share with public officials and policy makers why you believe the death penalty should be abolished in Idaho. Here are a couple ways you can TAKE ACTION:

      • Write a letter to your local newspaper editor. Read our sample letter to the editor.
      • Contact your elected official. Don't know who is your local senator or congressman/woman? Find out here.
Read the ACLU of Idaho's talking points on abolishing the death penalty. Use them as guiding messages in your letters or when talking to your elected officials.

      • If you are in Idaho:

On Friday, November 18 we will be meeting at the prison site starting at 6:45 am. The ACLU of Idaho will be providing signs with our message points and are looking for supporters to stand with us and reaffirm our commitment to end the death penalty.

Tell Governor Beshear to Stop All Executions in Kentucky

The death penalty system in Kentucky and throughout the nation is dramatically broken. Of the 92 inmates sentenced to die in Kentucky since 1976, 30 have had sentences reduced and one individual has been exonerated, suggesting pervasive problems at the trial court level. Death sentences are risky, unfair, unnecessary, completely ineffective at reducing crime and incredibly expensive. In a budget crisis so perilous that state workers are being furloughed, the state is spending millions of dollars each year on an ineffective death sentence.

Please join the ACLU of Oregon in thanking Gov. Kitzhaber for stopping the scheduled execution of Gary Haugen by granting him a temporary reprieve. Without the courageous action of the governor, Oregon would have carried out its first execution in 14 years.

The ACLU of Oregon, together with our coalition partners, petitioned the governor to take this action. In addition, almost a thousand Oregonians contacted him through our online action alert system, urging to stop the execution.

The most powerful indictment of the death penalty came from Gov. Kitzhaber himself at the press conference announcing his decision: “The death penalty is morally wrong and unjustly administered... In my mind it is a perversion of justice.”

Take action now: Thank Governor Kitzhaber for his historic decision to stop the execution of Gary Haugen.

The governor called upon the Oregon Legislature to propose reforms to our broken death penalty system.
