On March 6, 2008, the ACLU filed a lawsuit against the Nevada Department of Corrections, challenging the grossly inadequate medical care at Ely State Prison. A doctor retained by the ACLU to study inmates' medical records at Ely called the medical care there "the most shocking and callous disregard for human life and human suffering that I have ever encountered in the medical profession in my 35 years of practice."

Discrimination Against HIV-Positive Inmates in AlabamaLearn

Paulette Nicholas, a former prisoner who was incarcerated at the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka, Alabama, talks about the discrimination she faced as an inmate inside the prison’s HIV Unit. At the Tutwiler prison, female HIV-positive prisoners are housed separately, and until recently were given only the most limited access to programs and activities available to the general population. Eric Howard, a former prisoner who was incarcerated at the Limestone Correctional Facility in Harvest, Alabama, talks about the discrimination he faced as an inmate inside the prison’s HIV Unit. In this unit, HIV-positive men are segregated in housing behind barbed-wire fences, away from the general population. Their access to exercise, religious services, substance abuse programs, work opportunities, and community corrections programs was severely limited. MP3
