Salt Lake City, UT – The ACLU of Utah has sent a letter to Mayor Becker and the Salt Lake City Council supporting the Non Discrimination Ordinance proposed by the Mayor. The letter was in response to a call for public comments on the proposed ordinance.

Alabama School Reverses Decision To Bar Lesbian Student From Attending Prom With Her Girlfriend

RUSSELLVILLE, AL – The American Civil Liberties Union today applauded Franklin County School System officials for reversing their decision barring a lesbian student from attending the school prom with her girlfriend.

The School System’s about-face, permitting 17-year-old Tharptown High School junior Cynthia Stewart to bring her girlfriend to the upcoming March 25 prom, came after the ACLU sent a letter to the school on November 10 demanding that their initial decision be reversed.

NEW YORK — Today, New York's highest court unanimously affirmed the state's ability to recognize the out-of-state marriages of same-sex couples. But because the case only involved one state agency's recognition of out-of-state marriages, the four-judge majority called on the legislature to take up the marriage issue. The three concurring judges also noted the need for statewide recognition of same-sex couples' marriages.

The New York Civil Liberties Union today expressed disappointment about the State Senate’s failure to vote on legislation to give lesbian and gay couples the ability to marry in New York State.

“The senators missed an opportunity to make history and embrace fairness for all New York families,” said NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman. “Marriage is a defining civil rights issue of our day, and unfortunately, the State Senate has taken a position of ‘no action’ on it.”

NEWARK - The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) announced the resolution of a dispute involving two women who were turned away from a fundraising dance hosted by the organization.
