American Civil Liberties Union

 

 

The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California (ACLU-NC) is seeking an individual to sponsor as an applicant for a 2013 Equal Justice Works, Skadden, Soros or other fellowship focusing on improving educational opportunities for pregnant and parenting students in California’s Central Valley.

 

The ACLU-NC will work with the selected candidate to craft a fellowship project, which will involve various strategies to help teenagers with children succeed in school. The project would likely include a survey of school policies, program evaluations, client interviews, community meetings, know-your-rights trainings, advocacy with local school officials, production of reports, and, as needed, litigation, legislative and administrative advocacy.

 

The fellow will be based in our San Francisco office, supervised by an experienced ACLU attorney and the Director of the ACLU’s Reproductive Justice Policy Project.  The fellow will also travel to the Central Valley, where the ACLU maintains an office, to work with clients, schools, communities and local organizations.  Candidates with experience and enthusiasm for the educational rights of young parents are encouraged to apply and to bring their own ideas to this project proposal.  We will give preference to applicants who are fluent in Spanish.
