The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU), founded in 1920, is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, with more than 500,000 members and is dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution. The Affiliate Support and Advocacy Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York City seeks graduate students studying nonprofit management for an Internship for the Spring of 2013.
OVERVIEW
The Affiliate Support and Advocacy Department (ASA) helps to strengthen the capacity of 53 autonomous ACLU affiliates and national chapters throughout the country, with the goal of making the ACLU a genuinely nationwide organization. ASA staff are equipped with technical expertise, have insight into the needs of all ACLU affiliates and focus on all aspects of affiliate work.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
The Affiliate Support team offers an intern the opportunity to work on a wide range of nonprofit management issues, especially internal operations, planning, goal setting, board development, and leadership.
The Spring 2013 Graduate Internship requires an 8-12 week commitment. The internship is part-time, with weekly hours that are negotiable. Since this is an unpaid internship, students are highly encouraged to seek outside funding. Arrangements can be made with the student’s school for a work/study stipend or course credit.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working with the Affiliate Management and Operations Strategist on special projects. They will learn about providing support to nonprofit organizations of different sizes and structures that all operate together within a nationwide structure. The intern will gain experience by working on the following:
- Conducting research into nonprofit management issues.
- Drafting memos, white papers, and guides for affiliate leaders.
- Updating existing materials to reflect best practices.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
This Internship is open to graduate students currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in nonprofit management, organizational development, or related programs who possess the following:
- Excellent writing, research, and communication skills.
- Experience working in nonprofits and interest in advancing a career in the sector.
- Knowledge of one or more of the following: nonprofit financial management, board governance, planning and goal-setting, and organizational policy.
- Ability to analyze and write about complex nonprofit management and operations issues for diverse practitioners.
- A high degree of self-motivation and the initiative to see projects through to completion.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly in Word and Powerpoint.
- Basic understanding of and interest in civil rights and civil liberties issues.
