WASHINGTON - The House Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Defense met today to discuss the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay. The American Civil Liberties Union called for the Guantánamo Bay detention facility to be closed.
The following can be attributed to Christopher Anders, Legislative Counsel to the American Civil Liberties Union:
"The detainees at Guantánamo must be charged with a federal crime or released to countries where they will not be tortured or abused. Five years is more than enough for people to be held without charge. The federal government can no longer abandon the American values of due process at Guantánamo or anywhere else.
"America should not have the legal equivalent of outer space. The rule of law applies everywhere. Detainees who have been held for years in cages without any charges should be sent to countries where they will not be tortured or abused. As Senator McCain has suggested, detainees who either have been or will be charged can be sent to Fort Leavenworth."
