Genetic Testing

Today, more than 1,000 clinical genetic tests can be applied at any point of the life cycle. While most testing has been for rare genetic disorders, we are starting to see the development of tests for more common, highly complex diseases. As genetic testing enters into routine health care, it is critical to protect patient privacy. Also, as we identify more genes linked to diseases, the potential for genetic discrimination is heightened. The ACLU works to support legislation preventing genetic discrimination, and will continue to monitor this issue closely.
