FOIA Lawsuit on How the FBI Is Using the USA PATRIOT Act (04/21/2003)
The ACLU and other groups have filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the Justice Department in an effort to learn how the government is using the new powers granted to it under the USA/PATRIOT Act. Most of the new powers in question involve the expanded use of FISA. Because the Justice Department has not complied with FOIA requirements to provide information, the ACLU has filed suit to force the Justice Department to comply with the law.
