PROVIDENCE, RI -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island today released a report showing that public libraries in the state are impeding patrons' access to information on the Internet through the unnecessarily expansive use of so-called ""blocking software."" Calling the findings ""troubling,"" the 18-page report, ""Reader's Block,"" urged libraries to reassess the policies and practices they have implemented.

Federal Court Strikes Down Pennsylvania Law That Blocked More Than One Million Legal Web Sites (09/10/2004)
PHILADELPHIA -- In a critical test of a novel attempt to regulate speech on the Internet, a federal judge today held Pennsylvania's web blocking law to be unconstitutional. The court found that the state's ""Internet Child Pornography Act"" was ineffective in blocking child pornography, but was very effective in blocking access to more than one million constitutionally protected web sites with no sexual content.

NEW YORK - Recognizing the severe consequences of criminalizing online free speech, the Supreme Court today upheld a ban on yet another government attempt to censor the Internet, saying that content-based prohibitions of speech "have the constant potential to be a repressive force in the lives and thoughts of a free people."

ACLU of Ohio Urges School to Rescind Punishment for Student Who Criticized School in Off-Campus Postings (05/06/2004)
CLEVELAND -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio today sent a letter to Lancaster City Schools' Interim Superintendent on behalf of the family of a student who was suspended and is currently being expelled for creating a website that skewers school administrators and staff. The website was created and maintained off school grounds, using no school resources.
