New Jersey Court Ruling on Abortion Ban Protects Women's Health and Lives, ACLU Says (07/27/2000)
NEWARK, NJ -- The American Civil Liberties Union is encouraged by a decision of the court of appeals striking down a deceptively vague and dangerous law that would have put women's health at risk and banned all of the safest, most commonly used methods of abortion throughout pregnancy.

Pregnant Prisoner Barred from Obtaining Abortion To Receive New Sentence Tomorrow (07/13/2000)
CLEVELAND, OH -- At a hearing tomorrow morning, Yuriko Kawaguchi, the "pregnant prisoner" who was sentenced to a highly unusual jail term by a judge who openly sought to bar her from obtaining an abortion will receive a new -- and hopefully more fair -- sentence, according to her attorneys at the American Civil Liberties Union.

ANCHORAGE -- The Alaska Civil Liberties Union today applauded the State's decision to withdraw its pending appeal in the Alaska Supreme Court and let stand a Superior Court ruling that Alaska's statute banning so-called "partial birth" abortions is unconstitutional. Hours after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a similar Nebraska law yesterday, Alaska's Attorney General Bruce Botelho announced that he would withdraw the State's appeal in the AkCLU's case. Botelho told the Fairbanks Daily News Miner, "It is my view that the decision striking down the Nebraska law has direct implications for Alaska's law. Consequently, I am instructing our attorneys to dismiss our appeal."

Supreme Court Upholds Abortion Rights, Saying States May Not Endanger Women's Health (06/28/2000)
WASHINGTON -- In a resounding triumph for abortion rights, the Supreme Court today struck down Nebraska's ban on so-called "partial-birth abortion." Unambiguously reaffirming a woman's constitutional right of reproductive choice, the Court underscored that the state may not regulate abortion in a way that endangers women's health. In addition, the Court recognized that the ban would prohibit an array of safe and common abortion procedures and invalidated the law on this ground as well.
