ACLU Applauds Introduction of the Freedom of Choice Act (04/19/2007)
WASHINGTON - The American Civil Liberties Union today expressed its strong support for the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) introduced by Senator Barbara Boxer (D - CA) and Representative Jerrold Nadler (D - NY). This legislation would preserve women’s health and reproductive rights by protecting their right to privacy and ability to make their own reproductive choices.

ACLU and National Abortion Federation Criticize Decision by U.S. Supreme Court Upholding Federal Abortion Ban (04/18/2007)
WASHINGTON – The American Civil Liberties Union and the National Abortion Federation (NAF) today sharply criticized a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court upholding a federal law banning certain abortions. It is the first abortion decision from the Supreme Court since Justice Sandra Day O’Connor retired. Both organizations said that the Court’s decision will endanger women’s health.

Citing New Study Showing that Federally Funded Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage Programs Don’t Work, ACLU Calls on Congress to Stop Funding (04/13/2007)
WASHINGTON – The American Civil Liberties Union said the long-awaited release of a study showing that abstinence-only-until-marriage programs don't work should end the debate over federal funding for such extreme programs. The study, commissioned by Congress, looked at several federally funded programs and found that teens who participated in these programs were just as likely to have sex as teens who did not participate.

Gloversville Pharmacist Should Be Disciplined for Refusing to Honor Prescriptions for EC Refills, NYCLU and Planned Parenthood Charge (04/05/2007)
NEW YORK - In a complaint filed on behalf of a health care provider at Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson, the New York Civil Liberties Union today charged that a Rite Aid pharmacist who refused to fill a patient's prescription for refill doses of Emergency Contraception ("EC") should be disciplined by the New York State Board of Pharmacy for putting moralistic judgments before her professional responsibilities. This is the second complaint filed against the Rite Aid pharmacist.

ACLU of Florida Applauds New Wal-Mart Policy Requiring its Pharmacies to Fill Valid Requests for Birth Control (04/04/2007)
MIAMI – The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida today applauded a decision by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., requiring the national retail chain’s pharmacies to satisfy valid requests for birth control, including emergency contraception (EC). The policy shift came in response to Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s “Fill My Pills Now!” campaign, in which the ACLU of Florida participated.

ACLU Applauds Introduction of Responsible Education About Life Act (03/22/2007)
Washington - The American Civil Liberties Union today thanked Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) for re-introducing the Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act, a bill designed to ensure that young people receive complete, medically accurate information about reproductive health.

ACLU Criticizes Mississippi Governor for Signing Dangerous Abortion Ban into Law (03/22/2007)
JACKSON, MS - The American Civil Liberties Union today criticized the Governor of Mississippi for signing into law a dangerous and extreme abortion ban that will prohibit abortions in that state if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the right to access abortion.

ACLU of New Mexico Cries Foul Over Rio Rancho Abstinence-Only Sex Education Policy (02/27/2007)
RIO RANCHO, NM - The American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico raised objections on Tuesday to the participation of Rio Rancho School Board member Kathy Jackson in a January 22 vote not to offer alternatives to the district’s abstinence-only sex education curriculum. According to the New Mexico Secretary of State Office website, Jackson currently is a registered lobbyist for Best Choices Educational Services, Inc., the organization that contracts with the district to provide abstinence-only teaching. Jackson’s husband and Rio Rancho Mayor Keith Jackson also lobbies for Best Choices.

ACLU Calls on New Jersey Supreme Court to Protect Reproductive Freedom and Free Speech (02/20/2007)
TRENTON, NJ - The American Civil Liberties Union today called on the New Jersey Supreme Court to protect women’s reproductive rights and physicians’ free speech rights. The ACLU urged the court to overturn a lower court medical malpractice decision that would have the effect of improperly forcing physicians to give a non-medical, value-laden speech to their patients before performing an abortion.

ACLU Condemns Vote in South Dakota House of Representatives Approving Legislation Aimed at Banning Abortions in That State (02/15/2007)
PIERRE, SD -- The American Civil Liberties Union today condemned a vote in the South Dakota House of Representatives approving legislation aimed at banning almost all abortions in that state. The legislation comes on the heels of a statewide election last November that repealed a similar ban at the polls.
