Advocates Throughout the Country Urge States to Ensure Access to Emergency Contraception for Rape Victims (01/19/2006)
NEW YORK – Sexual assault groups, legislative officials, medical groups, women’s health advocates, and civil liberties groups throughout the country today launched statewide campaigns urging governors and other state officials to adopt protocols for treating sexual assault survivors that ensure access to emergency contraception (EC).

WASHINGTON - The American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) welcomed today's decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in Ayotte v. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, et al, which unanimously recognized its precedent that abortion laws must protect women's health and safety.

“If the Court accepts the government’s arguments in this case, it will give a green light to states to pass abortion restrictions that will harm women’s health in medical emergencies,” said Jennifer Dalven, deputy director of the ACLU’s Reproductive Freedom Project, and the attorney who argued before the Court today. “We are hopeful that the Court will recognize the importance of protecting women’s health and access to safe, legal abortion and rule in our favor.”

FARMINGTON, NM – The American Civil Liberties Union and other civil rights groups are protesting an essay contest at Farmington's Piedra Vista High School that asked students to explain why preserving marriage between men and women is vital society and why unborn children merit respect and protection.
