There has never been a more urgent need to preserve fundamental privacy protections and our system of checks and balances than the need we face today, as illegal government spying, provisions of the Patriot Act and government-sponsored torture programs transcend the bounds of law and our most treasured values in the name of national security.

Transcript of ACLU 9/11 Commission Radio Ad - Lieberman (9/24/2004)

FEMALE:  Dear Senator Lieberman:

I'm writing to you because I know you're about to act on the 9/11 Commission's recommendations.

I was scared after 9/11, and I'm still worried today.

That's why I know how important it is to reform the agencies that are responsible for protecting us from terrorists.

But if we can't protect our basic freedoms while preventing terrorism, then what are we fighting for?

I'm not the only on who feels that way.  The other day, I heard the mother of a 9/11 victim say...

Adele Welty:  "My son Timothy was a firefighter in the New York City fire department.  He was killed on September 11 in the World Trade Center.  I don't want the government using his death and the deaths of 3,000 people to undermine the Constitution and deny us our rights with the PATRIOT Act."

FEMALE:  Senator Lieberman:  Please. Don't let them add new PATRIOT Act amendments to the 9/11 bill. Make us safe. But keep us free.

Thanks for listening.

MALE:  Sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union.
