American Civil Liberties Union

There has never been a more urgent need to preserve fundamental privacy protections and our system of checks and balances than the need we face today, as illegal government spying, provisions of the Patriot Act and government-sponsored torture programs transcend the bounds of law and our most treasured values in the name of national security.

On January 31, 2007, the ACLU appeared before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, for oral arguments in ACLU v. NSA, our challenge to the Bush administration's illegal NSA spying program. The government appeal was in response to the ACLU's August, 2006 victory in U.S. District Court, when Judge Anna Diggs Taylor ruled the NSA program illegal.

Below, ACLU attorneys and clients discuss the case in the days leading up to the January 31 hearing. You can also hear audio of the hearing itself from the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
