American Civil Liberties Union

There has never been a more urgent need to preserve fundamental privacy protections and our system of checks and balances than the need we face today, as illegal government spying, provisions of the Patriot Act and government-sponsored torture programs transcend the bounds of law and our most treasured values in the name of national security.

Mark Your Calendar: Join Anthony Romero For Live Online Audio Chat (10/31/2003)

ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero will be speaking in a live audio chat Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 3:30 - 4 p.m. (ET). The chat will center on the now two-year-old USA PATRIOT Act and the burgeoning nationwide movement to fix that Act and other excesses of President Bush and Attorney General John Ashcroft.

At this time last year our civil liberties were under siege and our political leaders were silent on key issues. Now we are seeing the growth of a pro-liberty movement and our opponents have been forced on the defensive.

The ACLU won't rest until we have won back the freedoms lost after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and stopped a power-hungry government from eroding our rights any further.

That is why Anthony's chat will kick off a critical year-end membership campaign. The ACLU is determined to build on our momentum - but to do that we need as many people as possible to add their voices to the chorus demanding the restoration of our lost liberties and preventing further erosion of those precious freedoms.

That won't be easy, because President Bush, Mr. Ashcroft and their allies are determined to launch a new wave of assaults on fundamental freedoms by calling for an expansion of the unprecedented policing powers granted in the PATRIOT Act. If they get their way, America will end the coming year not with our lost freedoms restored, but with our civil liberties in even deeper jeopardy.
