RESOLUTION NO. 03-34
 
A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL IN SUPPORT OF USER PRIVACY IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES AND HOUSE BILL 1157 KNOWN AS
THE FREEDOM TO READ BILL

WHEREAS, The Town of Taos and its citizens are governed by the United States Constitution, including the Bill of Rights and the New Mexico State Constitution;
 
WHEREAS, The Town Council supports each library user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and the Constitution of the State of New Mexico;
 
WHEREAS, Citizens and organizations across the nation are fearful and concerned regarding the Patriots Act's denial of civil liberties,
 
WHEREAS,   Other communities from around the country have passed similar resolutions;
 
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE TOWN COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE TOWN OF TAOS that it is, has been, and remains, firmly committed to the protection of privacy of library users as guaranteed under the United States and the New Mexico State Constitution;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Town Council joins The Honorable Tom Udall of the United States House of Representatives, and the 109 other co-sponsors and the more than 150 municipalities across the nation in supporting House Bill 1157, the Freedom to Read Protection Act;
 
Resolved, this 17th day of June 2003 at the Regular Meeting of the Town Council.
