There has never been a more urgent need to preserve fundamental privacy protections and our system of checks and balances than the need we face today, as illegal government spying, provisions of the Patriot Act and government-sponsored torture programs transcend the bounds of law and our most treasured values in the name of national security.

Letter from Representative Grijalva supporting the resolution (5/8/2003)

                                                    April 24, 2003

Tucson Mayor and City Council
255 West Alameda Street
Tucson, Arizona 85701

Dear Mayor and Council Members:

I it is with deep concern about the ramifications of the USA PATRIOT Act that I wish to express to you, the Mayor and the City Council, my full support of the resolution proposed by Councilman Steve Leal.

In these times when we anguish about the future and confront the problems of the present, it is indeed a fitting time to pause and recommit ourselves to the very ideals that built our great nation.

This resolution reaffirms our nation's long and proud tradition of upholding our freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.  As we continue to champion these ideals abroad we must exemplify them here at home.

I urge you to stand united in this important time in history and to convey on behalf of all of us who live in Tucson our profound commitment to guarding our nation's founding principles and our unwavering support for all members of our ethnically rich and diverse community.

                                                  Sincerely,

                                                  Raúl M. Grijalva
                                                  Member of Congress
