There has never been a more urgent need to preserve fundamental privacy protections and our system of checks and balances than the need we face today, as illegal government spying, provisions of the Patriot Act and government-sponsored torture programs transcend the bounds of law and our most treasured values in the name of national security.

FBI Spy Files

Learn about recent FOIA requests filed by the ACLU >>
The ACLU has launched a nationwide effort to expose and limit FBI spying on people and groups simply for speaking out or practicing their faith. As a first step, the ACLU and its state affiliates have filed Freedom of Information Act requests in 10 states and the District of Columbia. We have evidence that the FBI and local police -- working through so-called Joint Terrorism Task Forces -- are spying on environmental, anti-war, political, and faith-based groups. We think the public deserves to know more about who is being investigated and why.

The FOIAs filed seek two kinds of information:
1) FBI files of groups and individuals targeted for their political views or their religion
2) Information about how the structure and policies of the JTTFs are encouraging rampant and unwarranted spying.
