Holding Phone Companies Accountable
The ACLU of Connecticut filed a request on May 24, 2006, for the PUC to investigate whether local phone companies have shared customers' phone records with the NSA. The commission inquired into the matter, requesting from the companies all relevant information of its cooperation with the NSA; several phone companies replied. On June 14, 2006, the state's Office of Consumer Counsel issued written comments in support of the ACLU's request for a full investigation. The Department of Justice intervened to stop the investigation, and the case was consolidated with other lawsuits against the phone companies in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in California.
