The Maine Civil Liberties Union filed a complaint on May 12, 2006, with the PUC to investigation whether Verizon has provided the NSA with customers' phone records. The PUC complied beginning an investigation by requiring a Verizon official to swear under oath to the truth of previous statements issued by Verizon regarding the National Security Agency's warrantless surveillance and data collection program. The Department of Justice intervened to stop the investigation, and the case was consolidated with other lawsuits against the phone companies in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in California.
On January 30, 2007, the Maine PUC initiated contempt proceedings against Verizon Maine for failure to comply with an August 9 court order. The order requires for a Verizon official to swear under oath to the truth of previous statements issued by Verizon regarding the National Security Agency's warrantless surveillance and data collection program.
