Holding Phone Companies Accountable
On May 24, 2006, the ACLU of Massachusetts filed a complaint with the Department of Telecommunications and Energy on behalf of the mayors of Newton, Somerville, Chicopee and Northampton to investigate whether Verizon and AT&T have shared customers' phone records with the NSA. Both Verizon and AT&T have urged the DTE to dismiss the complaint on "state secrets" grounds. The DTE has held no public hearings on the matter in spite of a statutory requirement to do so.
Demanding the Truth About Spying on Peaceful Protestors
The ACLU filed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for documents relating to the Pentagon's program of spying on peace groups.
These confirmed targets are organizations whose names have appeared in Pentagon Threat and Local Observation Notices (TALON) documents:
- United for Peace and Justice
- American Friends Service Committee
- Western Massachusetts Military Recruitment Education Network
These organizations have joined the ACLU in filing Freedom of Information Act requests for documents on surveillance of group activities:

- Women's Action for New Directions
